Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer By Michelle Hodkin

Publication Date: September 27, 2011
By: Simon & Schuster
Source: Library
Summary from goodreads:
Mara Dyer doesn't believe life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.
She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed.
There is.
She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.
She's wrong.

My Review:
The unbecoming of Mara Dyer is an achingly suspenseful masterpiece. Throughout the entire piece we see Mara Dyer, or so she calls herself, deal with life after a tragic accident that killed her closest friends. She wakes up from being unconscious for a few days with no memory of what happened to her. The pace after she leaves the hospital picks up. Throughout the book we wonder “what happened?”. Every few chapters there are hints as she starts to regain her memory of that day.
Along with her memories come the hallucinations. One minute she can be completely calm and as much as she can, normal. Then bam! Hallucinations? Memories? She is not sure which are coming back as her mind feels that she is able to handle the truth. The story takes on a darker feeling filled with her desperation. Is she losing her mind? Possibly.
Let’s not forget the romance. Heart attacks and swooning will ensue. Noah, Noah, Noah. He is everything you look for in a guy. He’s British and has an incredible accent. He's also a bit of a bad boy with a reputation. He's just....Whoa. There's no insta-love. Actually, at the beginning she hates his guts. She can’t stand him! But there is always another side to a story. He’s not what people make him out to be. Once she gets past all the walls, there is a believable, intense attraction between them that builds slowly and makes you fall in love right along with the Mara.
The ending will surprise you and leave you hungry for more. You don’t see it coming. It doesn’t just question if she was going insane or if the whole thing was real.
