Pages: 400

Summary: [Goodreads / Amazon]
The year is 1876, and there’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…
Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—
The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.
And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.
Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces.
But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.
My (Lisseth's) Review:
"This book is simply PERFECTION! Filled with the right amount of romance, action, twists, fighting, and mystery; it NEVER bores you & keeps you reading through the night!"
Going into this book i was a bit wary of this book at first because I haven't read many steampunk books that I actually liked. Especially ones with sorta zombies, well there called the "dead" but it thought that was an interesting concept. For me, it did NOT disappoint. I loved that the author captured that era perfectly. The writing & dialogue was what i would expect during of the time & she nicely portrayed the rules of society & the wealthy.
The Story.
It book starts with action & the dead, of course. Which was a nice change & i felt like it really captures the reader & made me reading more. It also introduced me to the wonderful 1800's in Philadelphia. The story never slowed down, there was always something happening, and i liked that A LOT. There are SO MANY twists in the plot that i NEVER saw coming that i was either left shocked, speechless or crying. (I did them all!)
The Characters.
The author did an AMAZING job in making each character unique, and there was a depth to each character that made me attached & like them. They were complex & I LOVE complex characters because they make a story more interesting. I LOVE Eleanor she's witty, bold, fearless, brave, stubborn, and a fighter till the end.
The Spirit Hunters.
Daniel is swoon-worthy. He's an inventor, hot tempered, stubborn, brave, a fighter, a protector, and caring! Joseph is someone I would have liked to meet in real life. He's mannered, elegant, and intelligent. Jie, she is one tough cookie, she is loyal, fierce, and yet she's friendly, which made me LOVE her character even more!
The Romance.
Well there is a very sweet & perfect romance in the mist of the problem of the Dead rising in Philadelphia. It's not insta-love, there are REAL feelings behind it & I really liked that the author did it because it made the romance BELIEVABLE! BUT then some other things that happen in the book and...and...AH! I can't tell you! But it's a heart breaker and i loved it!
The Ending.
God! That ending. The author didn't leave it at a cliffhanger, like many books, but it left YOU WANTING MORE! Many things went down that made me cry like a baby in the ending & the last sentence in the book especially! BUT there was no finality to it. More like a chapter closed in Eleanor's life ended and a new chapter started where she's changed for the better. She's stronger, more independent, and is determined to do what needs to be done. Of course there is one heck of a villain still lose but you feel at peace with the ending of the first book.
Overall I LOVED this book! It was just right. There are A LOT of things I can't say because I don't want to spoil the book, BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!!!! It is AMAZING! I highly recommend it! And it gets the EPIC 6/5 golden feathers!

Totally AMAZING! The chicken is going to PECK OUT YOUR eyes if you DON'T READ THIS! Can't wait for the next book!
A little bit about Susan Dennard:
I am a 28-year-old reader, writer, lover of animals, and eater of cookies. I used to be a marine biologist, but now I write novels. And not novels about fish either, but novels about kick-butt heroines and swoon-worthy rogues (I really like swoon-worthy rogues).
I live in Germany with my French husband and Irish setter, and you can learn more about my crazy thoughts and crippling cookie-addiction on my blog or twitter.
My debut, SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY, will be available from HarperCollins in 2012.
