Read-A-holicZ Stacking the Shelves (9)
Ok so I have felt fine using the Book Haul meme but I felt that I needed to be rooted somewhere, so I decided to change from Book Haul's to Staking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Plus I got a book shelf for my books a while back! So happy.
I also don't want to remake the meme pic I made (too much time went into it). So I will still be using the Book Haul one. So let's start!

Review: One Moment by Kristina McBride
Pub Date: June 26th 2012
By: EgmontUSA
Source: Publisher via Netgalley
Summary (Goodreads/Amazon):
"This was supposed to be the best summer of Maggie's life. Now it's the one she'd do anything to forget." Maggie remembers hanging out at the gorge with her closest friends after a blowout party. She remembers climbing the trail with her perfect boyfriend, Joey. She remembers that last kiss, soft, lingering, and meant to reassure her. So why can't she remember what happened in the moment before they were supposed to dive? Why was she left cowering at the top of the cliff, while Joey floated in the water below-dead? As Maggie's memories return in snatches, nothing seems to make sense. Why was Joey acting so strangely at the party? Where did he go after taking her home? And if Joey was keeping these secrets, what else was he hiding? The latest novel from the author of "The Tension of Opposites," "One Moment" is a mysterious, searing look at how an instant can change everything you believe about the world around you.
HAPPY RELEASE DAY!! =)
I did NOT know what I was getting myself into when I requested this book on Netgalley. I normally don't read contemporary books much but was caught by the synopsis, it seemed VERY interesting. So I gave it a try & was fairly pleased with this book.My (Lisseth's) Review:

Blog Tour: Against All Odds (review, interview, & Giveaway!)
Published: April 2011
By: Shabab Books Publishing-house
Source: Book Tour
Summary (Goodreads):
The Story revolves around: -A boy called Damien who seems to have it all. He's rich, good-looking and athletic. He's also arrogant, obnoxious and a major player. Damien is one of 5 children who seem to not get along, until one day Damien meets Alexis and his life is turned inside out. -A girl called Alexis who has trust issues due to her parents. Her best friends mean the world to her, and she refuses to date anyone that doesn't fit completely in her 'Perfect Guy' list. They're thrown together a lot and start to face inner demons they've hidden away for so long.
This book is what you would expect in a romantic comedy. The guy that has many girls but has difficulty getting the one he loves. BUT I think the author did an amazing job at adding in twists. Like the reason why the siblings quarrel or why Eddie owes Alexis. I didn’t quite like how Eddie’s secret is revealed, and I think that CC could have been WAY more devious.Karina's Review:

Blog Tour: Caterpillar by Kate Oliver (Review & Giveaway)
Published: April 10th 2012
By: MAB Books
Source: Blog Tour
Summary (add on Goodreads):
In a small college town in northern California, a lonely young man is working himself to the bone to solve a sixty-year-old problem ... a stranger with a will of iron and eyes the color of ice is searching for someone he can't identify ... and a girl who loves plants is about to grow roots of her own. When Cara Gallagher's parents are transferred overseas again, she's off to spend her senior year of high school living with her sister, a graduate student at the famed McNair University. Cara, a girl with a passion for science and an indifference to people, hopes this move will be her first step in claiming the independence she craves. Cara has her future planned down to the letter: her college, her major, her career. Then she saves Will Mallory's life, and both of their futures are completely rewritten. The last years of Will's life have been spent shifting from one identity to the next, dodging the FBI, and trying desperately to find a way home. But Will's home is forty-four light years away, and to reach it he'll have to outwit the man who's hunting him--and leave behind the only love he's ever known.
I normally do not like the whole sci-fi genre. The idea of other planets and other beings out there scares me a little. BUT this book was AMAZING.Karina's Review:

So happy to be uncovering two book covers today!! I am crazy to do all this work but I LOVE it. These covers look awesome!

KaSonndra Leigh was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. She now lives in the City of Alchemy and Medicine, North Carolina. She likes to write about people doing fantastical things in magical worlds. Her two sons have made her promise to write a boy book next.
She holds the MFA in creative writing, and loves to play CLUE, Monopoly (the Indiana Jones version), and Pandora's Box (good writer's block therapy). She lives in an L-shaped house with a garden dedicated to her grandmother. It has a secret library complete with fairies, Venetian plastered walls, and a desk made out of clear blue glass.
So here they are:

About:Dark Seraphine (A Lost Immortals Prequel)
Young Adult Paranormal Romance (Pub date: 9/2012)
Synopsis:
"Mom always says the angels walk among us. She forgot to tell me that sometimes they're not all fluffy and nice."Seventeen-year-old Caleb Wood has seen people he calls the walkers since he was a baby. It didn't take long for him to realize something…no one can see these strangers but him. They never stuck around or tried to touch him. And they never said a word. That was until one day on the first day of class in his senior year when an incredibly gorgeous girl strolls into his life…and things are never the same again. Soon Caleb realizes he has stepped into the middle of a growing conflict between two ancient groups. And his ability to see the invisible ones, the half-breeds that want to modify the human race, just might be the only hope both he and the mysterious, but infuriating Gia have of making it out alive.
About:When Silver Moons Rise (The Lost Immortals Book #2)
Young Adult Dystopian Fantasy (Pub Date: 11/2012)
Synopsis:Facing an unstable future, Chela Prizeon leaves Castle Hayne and crosses over to enemy territory in pursuit of Faris--the boy of royal blood who is cursed by a bitter rival. But soon Chela learns that he has been taken deep into the treacherous frozen prisons--a majestic, but deadly place where people enter and are never seen again. To find the boy she loves and his lost sister, Chela must join forces with one of her greatest enemies. And even though she pulls strength from the good in her powers, she finds herself drawn to the dark side's temptation as well. Narrated from both Chela's and Faris's point of view, this enchanting sequel to When Copper Suns Fall will take them on a voyage into unknown lands, where the dark, twisted, and revengeful wait to make this their most dangerous journey ever.

Excerpt from When Silver Moons Rise:
"I ask you again, Faris Toulan. Is this girl worth your life? Your immortality? Or what's left of it anyway,"Olivia hissed into my ear, a sneer on her face. I stayed silent, refusing to give in. She grasped my chin and forced me to look at her face. I glanced deep in her empty eyes, and said:
"Yes. Chela is everything to me. She’s all that you could never be. Your tricks can't remove what I feel for her."Dark eyes glared at me. Her harsh laugh ripped through my soul. The kindness she showed me earlier disappeared at once. I didn't care. All I hoped for, all I ached for was a chance to see Chela again. I promised to return as the protector she needed me to be. I refused to go back as the thing she was cursed to destroy. That would only hurt her more than I had already done. I intended to keep my word.
"I do hope you understand what you've agreed to do,"Olivia said in a low, but deadly voice, her breath on my ear, her cold fingers stroking my face.
"By the time I’m done with you, there won't be any other name you'll call except mine. Because that's how long you'll beg for mercy."She moved closer to my face and kissed my lips. I wanted to gag. Inside, I was already screaming. But her torture, or whatever she planned for me, was nothing compared to facing a life without Chela. By thinking of her face, her laugh, even the way she sometimes annoyed me, I could handle anything Olivia did.
Hell most definitely existed. I was about to experience it in full force.

Review: Among the Nameless Stars by Diana Peterfreund
Published: June 4th 2012
By: HarperCollins Publishers
Source: Authors blog (PDF)
Summary (add to Goodreads):
Before Kai joined the Cloud Fleet, he wandered… AMONG THE NAMELESS STARS Four years before the events of FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, the servant Kai left the North Estate, the only home he’d ever known, and Elliot North, the only girl he ever loved, in search of a better life. But the journey was not an easy one. Featuring narrow escapes, thrilling boat races and at least one deadly volcanic wasteland.
My Review:One word: AMAZING! Okay I read the small (84 pages) excerpt of For Darkness Shows the Stars that HarperTeen has on their website, HERE. That was SO good & will be buying it this week. So after the abrupt ending of that excerpt I needed MORE. So i stumbled upon this story. Kai's Story. I fell in love with Kai. He is my type of character, wounded, betrayed, and determined. I understood why he wanted his freedom, why he left. This POV story brought me SO much closer to him. It broke my heart every time he was writing letters to Elliot. He was expressing some really intense emotions & you see that his love was turning into hate, slowly as his journey was getting tougher. There are times when you just want to hug Kai! If i had been in his shoes, I would have probably gone back home. I cannot believe he stayed & i was so tearing when he mentioned how he was going to go back a wealthy and respected post. Aw! I mean, he even respected & understood Cleopatra, a service girl & her brother. We also see how he became an explorer and we meet the Innovation family. Which I LOVED that they had broken the barriers of being posts. I also now understood the mention of "some might not even be able to see", that Andromeda maid in For Darkness shows the stars. Someone is blind. Who? Read it! HERE! I LOVE the ending. You thought he was betrayed & left to rot in that cell of a life, literally. But then walk in Felicia Innovation & his life as Captain Malakai Wentworth. There is so much more in the story that I am probably not mentioning because I want YOU TO READ IT!
Totally AMAZING! The chicken is going to Peck this one OUT!
Video:
Of course there is no trailer for this book, but this one from Florence & the machine really captures Kai's past & personal demons he faced. As well as how he shook them out & became this wealthy respected person. Hope you like it! =)

Blog Tour: Bayou Myth by Mary Ann Loesch (review & excerpt)
Published: June 2012
By: Dragonfire Press
Source: Ebook for tour
Summary (goodreads/ Amazon)
As a sixteen year old voodoo queen in the making, Joan Renault just wants to be like all the other girls in the small town of Monte Parish, Louisiana—obsessed with boys and swamped with social lives. If the other kids would quit calling her “hoodoo hag,” she might have a small shot at normality. It would also help if Joan’s weekend outings with her secret crush, Dave, weren’t always being interrupted by her dead Grandmere, the legendary Marie Laveau. After all, it’s hard to make out with your best friend when your grandmother is watching! But when you come from a long line of voodoo priestesses with dried gator heads decorating the wall of their huts, normal doesn’t come easily. When Joan witnesses the brutal sacrifice of a child to a tree Druid, she learns her Grandmere’s scandalous past has come back to haunt those living in the present. Hera, a vengeful voodoo priestess is determined to use the residual energy of Pandora’s Box to revive a sleeping voodoo god and declare war on the descendants of Marie Laveau, especially Joan. Suddenly, Greek myths are being re-enacted all over town, and Joan has her hands full trying to sort it all out. With the approach of Samedi’s Day—the voodoo day of resurrection—Joan must learn to accept her destiny in order to stop the approaching threat to her family and friends.

My Review:First of all, I just want to say that I LOVE any book set in Louisiana. So I had to read this book. It was really good. I mean, the synopsis was really interesting. Long but interesting.

Review: [Uglies] Shay's Story by Scott Westerfeld, Devin Grayson, & Steven Cummings
Graphic Novel (208 pages)
Published: March 6th 2012
By: Random House Publishing Group
Source:Bought!
Summary (add on goodreads):
“This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves.”—ShayUglies told Tally Youngblood’s version of life in Uglyville and the budding rebellion against the Specials. Now comes an exciting graphic novel revealing new adventures in the Uglies world—as seen through the eyes of Shay, Tally’s rebellious best friend who’s not afraid to break the rules, no matter the cost.A few months shy of her sixteenth birthday, Shay eagerly awaits her turn to become a Pretty—a rite-of-passage operation called “the Surge” that transforms ordinary Uglies into paragons of beauty. Yet after befriending the Crims, a group of fellow teens who refuse to take anything in society at face value, Shay starts to question the whole concept. And as the Crims explore beyond the monitored borders of Uglyville into the forbidden, ungoverned wild, Shay must choose between the perks of being Pretty and the rewards of being real.
MY Review:
I really liked this graphic novel a lot. I thought it was going to be disappointed in the way the characters were brought to life. But I wasn't! I really liked the artist's rendition and consideration of detail.
There is even a section in the back where it shows you the rough sketches & revisions made to the characters. I loved the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld & was so excited when I heard this book was coming out, through Shay's POV.
I really liked that we got a whole new look at Shay & her part of the story in the uglies series. I really felt for her, with David drama, Smokie betrays, and herself. It brought new insight at Shay the person. We see her grow & rebel & be herself. I was really rooting for her, I know a lot of people see her as evil or as antagonistic character, But all I see is a girl that just never wanted to be alone. Which we see she is and that leads her to Tally, and if you read Uglies then you know what happens next.
The only thing that bothered me AT ALL was that Ugly Zane has light hair, whose color is never mentioned. Then Pretty Zane has dark hair. That totally confused me. I mean, i liked both Zane's but would have loved consistency.
There were a bunch of other characters like Ho, Croy, Astrix, and Tach. Really liked seeing them too! We also got a look at the Smoke and the infamous Dr. Cable, who did look scary! 0_o Tally was in there too, but not that much, more to the end really. Loved the ending and CAN NOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE!!
Really GREAT! The chicken is going to Peck this one OUT!
Picture Time!
